There is something so comforting about the aroma of fresh baked goods in your home. Imagine walking into your home. The instant promise of savory goodness hits your nose.
Fried pies are one of my favorite treats to indulge in. Maybe because down south, we don’t hesitate to stuff these treats down our mouths without any question.
I made the cutest, most perfect little homemade pies! It definitely brought homesickness to my heart.
For anyone who has never had a fried pie, they are the perfect treat to make. Let me explain why: They are crispy and flaky on the outside. Warm and gooey on the inside.
One thing I love about these is how you get to adjust it to what you want. I prefer apple filling, but that doesn’t mean chocolate pudding or Pulled Pork won’t be great as fillings!
One of my favorite things about this recipe is that it requires little prep work. It is under $7! Who wouldn’t love that combo? You need to add these to your list of absolutely foolproof beginner recipes.
I will take you through the art and science of making fried pies. It truly is easier than you think. From getting the perfect filling to achieving the flaky goodness crust, I won’t lead you astray.
For this recipe, we will be doing quick and easy pies. We will take our time to get to the homemade dough and apple pie filling.
Here is what you will need:
Vegetable oil
1 Roll of Pillsbury Pre-made pie dough
8 oz Can of Apple Pie Filling
Easy, right? Who knew you could make such good treats with few ingredients and prep.
STEP BY STEP:
I first started off by heating my oil in my Dutch oven. I set that to medium-heat.
While that was heating up, I moved on to warming my filling. I got the $2 canned apple filling from Walmart for this. With this step, I decided to add some things I had on hand to make this filling even better.
I warmed up the filling and these ingredients on low heat: two tablespoons of butter, 1/4 cup of brown sugar, and a tablespoon of cinnamon sugar. But feel free to ignore this step as it is not necessary!
While that was warming up, I started to roll out my pre-made dough.
Now, this step can be of your own choosing. I would use a bowl to cut out the dough shapes, but if you like small pies like me, I would use a cup to cut out the dough pieces.
Cut out the shape of dough to your liking, and set aside, ready to be full of filling.
Grab your filling and put a spoonful (or more!) on your dough pieces. Grab another shape to lay over the filling piece, and use a fork to seal the dough/circle.
TIP: To see if your oil is ready, put a wooden utensil in to the oil. If the oil forms bubbles around your spoon, you are ready to start frying!
Once your oil is ready, gently place the pies into the fryer.
Keep a constant watch on the pies. In my experience, some pies cook quicker than others!
I only needed two minutes per side. It could be different for you, so take the pies out whenever they turn golden brown.
Lay the fried pies on a plate of paper towels to absorb the rest of the oil.
Let the pie cool off completely before serving!
You do not need to do apple filling if you do not like apple filling. There are so many different options for filling that you could use instead! Here are some variations:
Blueberry
Peach
Chocolate
Cherry
BBQ Pulled Pork
Breakfast (Egg, Potato and Bacon!)
Lemon
Strawberry
Coconut Cream
Apricot
Peanut Butter
Cheese and Spinach
Hopefully, these pies turn out for you like they do for me. When I make my more advanced recipe for these, I enjoy the satisfaction of rolling my sleeves up and getting my hands dirty. Every step truly is an adventure.
That is my favorite tip to tell people with these recipes: Embrace the floury mess and treat yourself to the simple creation you made. I promise you that you will find such an experience with this!
So, whether you are hosting a get-together or just craving grandma’s homemade fried pie, these will satisfy your sweet tooth.
